Do I Need a Performance Solution?
Most building projects follow the Deemed to Satisfy provisions of the National Construction Code. A Performance Solution is the other pathway. It is used when part of a design departs from those provisions, or when they do not clearly cover the building. It shows the approval authority that the design still meets the NCC Performance Requirements.
This free checklist asks eight short questions about your project, including access. It then tells you whether a Performance Solution is likely, possible or probably not needed, and what to do next. It takes about two minutes. Nothing you select is stored or sent anywhere.
This checklist is general guidance only. It is not a compliance assessment or legal advice. Your building surveyor or certifier decides what the approval of your project requires, and requirements vary by state and building class.
Frequently asked questions
Who decides whether I need a performance solution?
Your building surveyor or certifier decides what is needed for approval. This checklist helps you prepare for that conversation.
Does a performance solution mean my design is non compliant?
No. It is a recognised NCC pathway to compliance. It is used whenever a design meets the Performance Requirements by a route other than the Deemed to Satisfy provisions.
Do the rules differ by state?
Approval processes and who can approve a solution differ between states. Choose your state in the checklist for a link to the page for your state.
How much does a performance solution cost?
It depends on the size and complexity of the departure. Request a Fee Proposal for a fixed quote.
